Machine learning (машинное обучение, теория самообучающихся машин) – интенсивно развивающаяся область теории искусственного интеллекта, применяющая методы из самых разных разделов математики, от математической статистики и теории алгоритмов до функционального анализа и оптимизации. Выпускник практически любой кафедры сможет найти в этой области задачи в соответствии со своей специализацией.

На факультете Computer Science и в Исследовательском центре машинного обучения Royal Holloway University of London ведутся как теоретические исследования (теория предсказаний, универсальные алгоритмы, предсказательная сложность, теоретический анализ задач регрессии и классификации), так и прикладные (биоинформатика, финансы, анализ компьютерных сетей).

Я учусь в городе Йоэнсуу в Финляндии, получаю магистра в сфере Иниформационных технологий. Хочу поделиться информацией по магистратуре. Если будут какие-то вопросы - пишите, я отвечу. :-)

Магистратура в Финляндии бесплатная в принципе! На проживание нужно где-то 300 евро - это квартира и еда.

В свое время я получала стипендию по гранту, но в прошлом году грант закончился. Ребята приезжают без стипендии, и ищут работу, или если становятся лучшими студентами, после полугода начинают получать стипендию.

Моя программа называется IMPIT - это междунарадоная программа по Информационным технологиям. Направления: разработка программного обеспечения (дизайн, юзибилити и т.д.), образовательные направления (e-learning, educational technology и т.д.), алгоритмы распознования речи и изображения, спектральное изображение и т.д. Все курсы читаются на английском, так что знание финского не обязательно.

Area: Peer to Peer Architectures for the Power Grid

Project description: The Energy sector is undergoing a radical transformation. The traditional distinction between producer and consumer is slowly disappearing. In fact, energy production by such diverse means as photovoltaic panels, cogeneration, or wind power is easily within reach of average households that are currently being equipped with smart meters (energy measuring devices with computational and communication capabilities). These new technologies strengthen the vision of the future energy market, where any node of the power grid will buy, produce and sell energy to any other node in an open, peer-to-peer, democratic market. In this future scenario, energy exchange is more efficient, has higher availability guarantees and is cheaper.

To accomplish the exciting vision of a democratic energy market, we propose to investigate two crucial scientific and technological aspects. On the one hand, we shall perform a complex network analysis to identify the topological and structural needs of the power grid. On the other hand, we shall design, test, and showcase an innovative software layer (middleware) for smart meters. These two research initiatives are geared towards understanding and designing the infrastructure of the future peer-to-peer democratic energy market.

We propose a radical new view on power grid analysis and design by looking at the energy arena from a complex network/software point of view, rather than the traditional Electrical Engineering perspective. The research is strengthen by the collaboration with the energy companies active in the Netherlands.

We are offering a PhD position in accordance to this vision in one or more of the following areas: Complex network analysis of Power Grids, Simulation, Diagnostics and Diagnosability of failures, Peer-to-Peer architectures, Pervasive computing.

Area: Managing Complex Cloud Systems

Vacancies: 1 PhD student

Project description: Cloud computing is a novel paradigm where services and resources availability scales dynamically on demand. Due to reduced maintenance costs, more and more software solutions are provided as services within cloud systems, and first adoption of cloud concepts is proving successful, e.g., Google App Engine or Amazon S3. Still, there is a lot of space for improvement. For example, consider complex software systems, with sophisticated user interfaces, possibly built on top of legacy systems. And one notices that cloud computing does not provide necessary support. This is even more evident if we consider applications within highly dynamic environments with changing requirements on-the-fly, unpredictable failures, with limited or no control over execution. This is especially important in the domains where maintaining single version of the software system satisfying all potential customers is either unfeasible or cost-ineffective.

One of the possible solutions is to apply intentional aspects to the development and deployment of services in the cloud. Intentions represent goals and expectations of different parties involved in the cloud: software providers, customers, cloud infrastructure vendors, etc. Intentions are inherently declarative, leaving a complete freedom for the execution environment to decide how to execute the program, and how to achieve (or not to violate) given declarative definitions. Having intentions attached to individual services (in form of service level agreements), to software systems, to cloud infrastructure would result in better cloud solutions, giving more control to individual participants yet maintaining traditional cloud computing benefits.

We offer a PhD position in the area of service oriented architecture considering one or more of the following topics: Cloud computing infrastructure, Software as a service scenarios, Automatic composition of services, Domain-specific languages for cloud systems.

Required profile (for both positions):

* You should have a M.Sc. or equivalent in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline.
* You are expected to have an excellent academic record (list of examination marks from your university degree) and be curious, creative and ambitious.
* You should be able to write scientific articles and reports (proven by your graduation thesis or another comparable report) and be fluent in English.
* Ability and desire to design, implement and manage information systems is a strong plus.
* Knowledge in Distributed systems and Web services is considered a plus

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers outstanding candidates a Ph.D. fellowship and an accompanying stipend. The fellowship is for a period of four years which should result in the Ph.D. defense of the candidate. The stipend starts from about 1400 euros (the candidate has to take care for tax - about 3% - and health insurance) per month in the first year and will be adjusted to general price movements once a year. After one year, the performance of the candidate will be evaluated to decide whether there is sufficient progress to expect a successful completion of the Ph.D. thesis within the remaining three years. The research will be focused on developing new machine learning methods for structure processing minimizing feature engineering, exploiting available abundant but indirect supervision and as well as on studying methods for inducing and integrating various types of prior knowledge.

Saarland University is a European leader in Computer Science research and teaching, and is especially renowned for its research in Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing. The newly established group is a part of the interdisciplinary MMCI Cluster of Excellence formed in partnership with top-ranked research institutions located on the Saarland University campus: Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, Max Planck Institute for Software Systems and German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). The ideal candidate for the PhD position should have a masters degree in computer science, mathematics or a related field with a strong background in mathematics, statistics and algorithms. Background in machine learning and computational linguistics is desirable but not required.

Тема: разработка дедуктивных алгоритмов для автоматического доказательства в языках для представления информации (Ontology Languages).

Подтема для аспиранта: разработка практических методов решения системы уравнений (constraints) над множествами и их кардинальтостями. Пример задачи: даны три множества А B C, каждое содержит минимум 5 элементов; попарное пересечение любых двух содержит максимум 3 элемента. Может ли объединение А B и С содержать 6 элементов? 7 элементов? 8 элементов? Необходимо разработать алгоритм решающие подобные системы уравнений и внедрить его в систему разрабатываемую в ходе проекта (ontology reasoner). Знакомство с методами (целочисленного) линейного программирования (задачи оптимизации, симплекс метод, Fourier-Motzkin elimination algorithm) а также с языками предтставления информации (knowledge representation languages: description languages, ontology languages, modal languages) будет плюсом для кандидата.

Fully Funded D.Phil (PhD) Studentship

Project: ConDOR: Consequence-Driven Ontology Reasoning

The Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Group is offering a fully funded D. Phil (PhD) position at Oxford University's Computing Laboratory. The post is funded by EPSRC as part of the ConDOR project [1]. The aim of the project is to investigate alternative kinds of "consequence driven" reasoning procedures for widely used knowledge representation formalisms, including the W3C's OWL ontology language [2].

The studentship is fully funded (at EU fees level), and includes a stipend of at least £12,940 per year as well as provision for travel to conferences. Students admitted with a start date between 1st January and 1st October, 2009 will receive a guarantee of 3 years funding. The successful candidate will join an internationally renowned research group [2] working on a cutting edge research problem in an attractive and stimulating environment within one of the worlds leading universities and computer science departments [3].

The PhD research will be performed in the research group human-computer interaction (HCI) of EDM. Relevant research domains covered in HCI research at EDM are:
- technologies and tools for the realisation of user interfaces for ubiquitous computing;
- model-based development of interactive applications;
- context-aware, distributed and migratable user interfaces.

2. PhD Scholarship in computer science
The intended research is situated in the domains of networked virtual environments (NVE) and human-computer interaction (HCI). More specifically, synchronization in scalable networked virtual environments is studied, supporting simulation-based interaction. The investigated synchronization techniques enhance consistency of the status of the virtual environment as presented to all users. Heterogeneous environments (different platforms, I/O devices etc.) are taken into account. Besides synchronization techniques, interaction techniques and the flexibility in their realization play an important role in the envisioned research. Usable multimodal interaction metaphors are designed for individuals as well as groups of users.

Область исследования (по выбору):

мультимасштабное представление интегральных и дифференциальных операторов; теория многомерных вейвлетов;
разработка алгоритмов для компьютерного моделирования биополимеров; компьютерный дизайн биоактивных соединений; статистическая механика макромолекул и молекулярных жидкостей; мультимасштабный анализ в теоретической химии.

Условия работы: Аспиранты обеспечены всем необходимым для научной деятельности. Рабочим языком является английский. Для желающих изучить немецкий язык организуются дополнительные занятия. Стипендия составляет около 1000 евро в месяц, для семейных аспирантов существуют надбавки. Аренда одно-двухкомнатной квартиры в Лейпциге составляет 300-400 евро в месяц, стоимость проживания - 150-200 евро в месяц.

Требования к кандидатам в аспирантуру:
Образование: высшее образование, желательно не ниже уровня специалиста. Возможен прием бакалавров после дополнительного собеседования. Студенты последнего курса могут подавать заявления при условии окончания не позднее 01.08.2008 года.

Знания: в зависимости от выбранной тематики требуются уверенное знание в рамках программы высшей школы одной или нескольких из следующих областей: вычислительные методы и прикладная математика; компьютерные науки; теоретическая и математическая физика; компьютерное моделирование;

Персональные качества: Желание заниматься наукой, целеустремленность, умение работать в группе, хорошие коммуникационные навыки

Компьютерные навыки: Базовые знания о работе в Unix/Linux. Умение программировать на одном\нескольких из следующих языков: С, C++, Fortran, Java, Perl, Tcl, Bash Scripting Language. Знание основ компьютерной графики и умение составлять научно-технические тексты. Плюсом для кандидатов будет являться знание TeX/LaTeX и умение работать с Matlab, Maple и Mathematica.

Языковые навыки: Абсолютным условием приема является умение читать научно-технические тексты на английском языке. При прочих равных условиях предпочтение будет отдаваться кандидатам с лучшим знанием научно-технического английского языка.

Срок аспирантуры: 3 года (возможно продление срока на год).

Выпускник практически любой кафедры сможет найти в этой области задачи в соответствии со своей специализацией.

Postdoctoral position at the Department of Mathematics

At the Department of Mathematics there is a vacant position as postdoctoral fellow within the project "Modelling transport in porous media over multiple scales" for 4 years. 
 
A postdoctoral position is a temporary appointment.  The term of employment for this position is 4 years, of witch period 25 pct will be designated to teaching or similar. It is not possible for any person to work under more than one temporary appointment for the same institution.
 
The objective of postdoctoral positions is to qualify the selected candidates for work in senior positions in their disciplines.
 
The project this position is a component of is funded by the Norwegian Research Council under the Outstanding Young Investigator programme. The successful candidate will join a research team which aims at integrating the fields of upscaling, multi-scale methods and numerical linear algebra within the context of multi-phase flow in porous media. The project will address both theoretical and practical issues, and the candidate will be expected to familiarize him/herself with a broad spectrum of knowledge to form an active part of the research team.
 
We are soliciting applications from candidates with a background in applied mathematics. Special qualifications which should be emphasized in the application are familiarity with numerical methods for partial differential equations, multi-grid pre-conditioners, multi-phase flow in porous media and programming.
 
Applicants must have achieved a Norwegian doctorate or equivalent education abroad, or have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for application. It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted.
