PhD Studentship in Computational Modelling at Queen Mary, University of London
PhD Studentship: Shallow water modelling for environmental engineering problems
Queen Mary, University of London -School of Engineering and Materials Science

The project in question will be primarily devoted to computational modelling of tidal flows. The goal will be to develop a new unsteady high-resolution model for the prediction of flow unsteadiness typical of operational conditions of the tidal turbines, e.g., the variation of the effective angle of attack of a turbine blade due to the incoming free-stream turbulence. This model can then be used in the turbine blade design optimization studies. In addition, another use of the (multi-layer) shallow-water model developed can be to study oceanic flows such as double-gyre currents at eddy-resolving regimes. The prerequisites for the project will include previous background in mathematical/computational modelling.

Supervisors: Dr Sergey A. Karabasov

Research Area: Modelling and Simulation in Engineering Systems

Keywords: computational modelling, numerical methods, high-resolution numerical schemes, geophysical fluid dynamics, tidal energy
